Pedal Practice

Yesterday was a BIG day in our home--Alexander turned 15 1/2 and was eligible for his driving temps. After school, Alexander and I headed to the BMV. After a slight detour (the agency moved, but the original address was still posted on the website) we FINALLY arrived at our destination. Alexander successfully passed his written test and after waiting in line and signing several documents it was picture time. After the picture we waited patiently for Alexander's name to be called. As luck would have it the machine processing Alexander's temps "broke". The drivers finishing before and after Alexander received their licenses, but Alexander's remained in limbo. Soon we watched the machine being "taken apart" and low and behold out came the missing document--Alexander's temps! With snow falling heavily, we decided it would be best if Mom drove the 45 minutes home!

The BMV provided the student driver stickers and we decided it was wise to post one in Trey's car.

Vertical Adventures

Over Christmas Break, Noah and a friend visited Vertical Adventures. Noah joined the rocking climbing club at middle school and we thought it might be fun to get acquainted with the facility prior to his first school trip. Today, Noah returned to Vertical Adventures and was able to climb some lines he didn't try over break. Noah doesn't know a soul in the club, but he's determined to have fun and make new friends.

Hard to believe we're celebrating our 5th Christmas in Ohio! One of our holiday traditions is visiting the "Festival of Lights" annually. As the boys grow older their interest in the event decreases, but I think everyone goes to "humor Mom". If truth be told, I've always enjoyed Christmas lights and I think it's fascinating to see them displayed in various shapes and sizes. Below are some of our favorites.

And, the trip wouldn't be complete without cookies and hot cocoa and a trip to see Santa. By the way, Santa is tucked away in a private room--if the set-up were public, I wouldn't encourage the boys to see Santa--promise!

Alexander and his lab partner, Allison, have worked hard on their Honors Physics project for the past 6 weeks. The goal: to successfully and creatively construct a catapult. Their grade results from their success in making baskets from the free throw and three point lines in a 2 minute time frame. In addition, their grade is based on the success of others in the class. Last night was the final attempt to make successful baskets; mission accomplished. Today the class will present their catapults. After much trial and error Alex and Allison are confident their catapult can stand today's test.

Noah awoke early, skipping his opportunity to sleep-in, and joined me for a day at Little Lambs. After Circle Time, Noah joined me in the "quiet" room.

Noah was a real trooper and allowed the first group of kids to select anything from the dress-up box for him to wear--his first "get-up" was tame in comparison to...

the next dress-up request. Whatever the the boys and girls asked him to wear, he did with a smile.

The second group of children invited him to another feast.

Noah was relieved when "Free Choice/Center Time" ended. He read, "Baby Bear, Baby Bear What Do You See?" for one of our "Five Senses" books.

Tuesday was a warm, sunny day in Ohio, so we decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and took the class outside for an extended time at the "big" park.

Noah, thanks so much for joining Mom on your day off. I really enjoyed having you by my side. The class adored meeting you and playing with you!! Thanks for being such a trooper!!

I married my Prince Charming. I'm so thankful for the journey that unfolds each day. There are many chapters to our story and while sometimes the "writing" may not be what we choose, I wouldn't change any of the ups and downs we've experienced. The journey has strengthened our marrige and I love you more and more each day. Happy 17th Anniversary--looking forward to the new chapters yet to be written.

A"maize"ing Fun!

Last Saturday afternoon, once sports were finished and everyone had a chance to rest, we ventured to the Maize at Little Darby Creek.

Each year the "Maize" changes. This year the maze commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Both boys are history enthusiasts and I figured it might be the only way to get them to a corn maze--they were definitely intrigued.

We decided it would be appropriate to enjoy kettle corn while getting "lost" in the maze. Let the adventure begin!!

Apparently, I'm easily amused--I thought this sign was hilarious, but my family just passed it by.

I followed their lead--whether it led us in the right direction or in circles.

Somehow, after struggling with our directions, we managed to find the maze exit. I'm still shocked the boys agreed to this picture!

The slides were fun for young and old alike. Noah FLEW down the corn chute and...

We enjoyed the farm animals--we spent quite a bit of time watching the goats. Trey discovered a pulley system that delivered food to the goats atop the tower. Of course, they're conditioned to notice the food, but Trey sent it up to them...empty. Poor goats!

The boys thought the manual carts were a lot of fun. It was hard, but they refrained from bumping into one another.

We thoroughly enjoyed our family time together and the boys suggested we return next year!

Our First Letterboxing Adventure

We found our clues on http://www.letterboxing.org/ before beginning our adventure. Noah was designated as our "clue reader". The clues take you off the beaten path, but it was fun to navigate through the leaves and over fallen trees and rocks, climb up dry creek beds and explore.

Unfortunately, we confirmed that the 1st and 4th "letterboxes" remain "unkown".

Our clues for the "Animal Quest" led us to two letterboxes! We were thrilled to find the "froggy", which took a lot of effort and the "lizard", which we easily found.

We brought our own stamp pad, stamp and pen and wrote a comment in the letterbox before concealing the letterbox for the next adventurer(s).

watching Noah on the soccer field. He's scored 2 goals this year and is thoroughly enjoying his soccer games.

As I've mentioned before, it brings me great joy to watch the boys play their respective sports. They both try hard, are team players and enjoy what they're doing.

Can't believe both seasons will be wrapping up by month's end.

Honors Physics 100 Foot Egg Dop

IT MADE IT! After hours and hours of hardwork--the egg contraption worked!

Trey and Alexander-showing no egg splatter inside their contraption. A styrofoam cup with colorful straws placed around the interior. The egg was then placed in a germination cup topped with another germination cup and then placed inside the sock. The boys removed the sides of the box thinking that the structure would lend better to the fall and "float to the ground". The suspended sock was tied in place from the four corners with fishing wire. Boys, absolutely brilliant!

A HUGE thank-you to my friend, Andrea (Trey's Mom), for taking pictures and sharing them with me. I was at preschool during the drop and had to miss the Egg Drop fun. Again, congratulations Alexander and Trey on a job well-done!

Homecoming 2011

Alexander insisted on wearing a bow tie to Homecoming. My parents and sister were in town last weekend and enjoyed shopping for a bow tie with Alexander. His plans to attend dinner with friends fell through last weekend, but he insisted on attending the dance. I'm proud of him for having the courage and confidence to attend the dance alone and meet friends at the dance once he arrived. He had a GREAT time and smiled when he said he'd go next year!

I realize the picture doesn't match the title, but it's the best I could do! Noah invited a couple friends over for pizza before the dance. After dinner they were in the basement playing Kinect and I asked if I could take a quick picture before transporting them to the dance. I knew there was NO WAY I'd be allowed to take a picture at school, so I took would I could get. I still can't believe he's old enough to be attending a dance!

6th Grade Adventure Club

The object of Island Hopping: successfully move each member of your team across the "water" by laying boards from "island to island". There was no talking allowed between team members and if a board hit the "water" it was unusable and if a team member fell in the water or someone spoke, all boards were returned and the game started over again. It was a wonderful challenge to witness. The kids really thought about which boards to place where and who was strong and well-balanced to hold and position the boards carefully. Once the boards were laid in place--they did a wonderful job encouraging one another from one side to the other--a very rewarding challenge for all!

The boards are positioned between each "island" and each member is now carefully crossing the boards to the other side.

Noah, who claimed he was terrified of heights, dangled his body off the side of the ropes course!

Preparing for Geo-Tracking. The device led the students on a scavenger hunt throughout the back fields of the school. Eventually the smaller teams learned that their Geo-Tracker spelled "Teamwork".

Noah's last station was the Rock Wall. Getting harnessed and preparing for his climb.

The school district provides Adventure Day for each 6th grade class at all 4 middle schools. It's a rewarding and fun time for the kids and I'm happy I was able to witness their success today!

The current sophomores, juniors and seniors were honored for their academic success during the prior year recently. The GPAs of the students being honored averaged over 4.0 for all three classes. Alexander completed a very challenging year of classes and we're extremely proud of the effort and success he achieved during his first year of high school. WAY TO GO ALEX!

I'm happy to report that both boys had a GREAT first day of school. I thought about Noah ALL day wondering if he'd be able to easily open his locker, make it to class without being tardy and find friends in his new classes. He returned home with stories to share and a HUGE smile on his face--what a comfort knowing that he's really going to be OK. Meanwhile, we didn't see Alexander until 6pm, but when he returned home, he had lots of stories to share too. As a Mom, it's a HUGE relief knowing your children are happy at school. Praying the happiness continues and that both have an amazing year!

Hard to believe that "our baby" begins 6th grade! For the first time, he will be attending a school Alexander once attended and has the possiblity of having some of Alexander's former teachers. It's an exciting time and aside from some locker struggles, Noah seems ready to begin his newest adventure. Since I can't take my annual "first day of school" at the bus stop picture, the boys humored me and allowed me to take a picture at school since no one was around to notice.

Rock Climbing

The day before school began (8/17/2011), Alexander had afternoon/evening football practice and Noah and I were left to an afternoon alone. Noah decided to invite Eli to join us for a walk around the neighborhood with Sophie and then an adventure in rock climbing at the Westerville Community Center.

Both boys came SO close to reaching the top, so I told them that ONE of them MUST reach the top before we could return home. They both looked at me like I was crazy, surely you must be kidding they both responded. Nope, I assured them I wasn't. Thank heavens Noah reached the top because I was beginning to think I might be residing at the Community Center rock climbing wall!

Spending Time With My Dad

Noah and I recently returned to Ohio with my Dad. We enjoyed our visit in South Carolina and began the trek home with Dad so we could attend his family reunion together. The first day home we spent running between the high school and middle school--football practice, doctor appointment, more football practice, middle school schedule pick-up and high school schedule pick-up. Friday we dined with Dad's aunt and uncle (both 92 years old) as well as his cousin and her husband.

After the Central HS football scrimmage Saturday morning, we took Dad to Schmidt's in German Village.

We thoroughly enjoyed our German dining experience in historic German Village. Good food, good beer (according to Trey and Dad) and good times!

We had a beautiful day on Hunting Island. We enjoyed a picnic lunch beside the lighthouse and then took a long, leisurely walk on the beach, toes in the sand and surf. The ocean has caused much beach erosion to the island. As a result of the erosion, many fallen palm trees line the edge of the beach and the lighthouse had to be relocated farther inland to protect it from the seas. Protected turtle nests dot the beach and the number of shells to collect was endless. Thanks Mom and Dad for a special day at the beach.

There's a bonus to visiting my parents--my aunts and uncle live in Sun City too. Upon retiring, they agreed they would all reside in the same location. After so many years of living far apart from one another they desired to finally be near each other during retirement. I love that their dream became a reality!

For as long as I can remember, my Dad has held a keen interest in anything and everything trains. As a child, I remember visiting train bridges, train depots, train shows, train layouts, train museums and numerous hobby stores. Dad's an avid member of the Sun City Model Railroad Club. Currently, the club is in the process of redoing their expansive layout. Below are pictures of completed areas as well as work in progress. Truly, it's amazing to see the attention to detail and to recognize how many hours and hours these gentlemen have labored on something they all enjoy so much. I'm happy my Dad knows some wonderful people that share his passion for trains--it's definitely a hobby that brings him much joy and it's easy to become absorbed in his excitement.

Heading South...Slowly

Waiting in Charlotte, NC hour after hour after hour for our next flight to Jacksonville, FL. What an adventure! Noah and I were extremely grateful that we were in the terminal and not sitting on a plane for hours, like some unfortunate passengers! While the airport remained closed due to storms, we had lunch, people-watched and played games. Never once did Noah complain OR play his DS! We were ecstatic when they finally announced boarding for our flight. Little did we know that although we were sitting on the plane it didn't mean we were leaving...sigh. We sat for almost another 1 1/2 hours waiting for fuel (um, slightly important) and food services. At long last, the plane finally moved from the gate and we were 8th for take-off; not bad considering the airport had been closed for HOURS! Upon landing roughly in FL, we stopped on the tarmac, waiting again as a recent lightning strike on the field had caused another delay. My parents were wonderful and waited the entire day in Jacksonville for our arrival. Once with them, we retrieved our soggy, damp luggage and began our 2 hour drive to Hilton Head. We arrived around 10pm--5 1/2 hours later than anticipated, but we were safe and happy! After watching the news, we learned that Charlotte had horrible flooding while we sat in the airport. Noah now likes to claim that we survived the Charlotte flood of 2011--oh good heavens!

By sheer coincidence, both boys' first concerts--David Crowder Band! Trey took Alexander to see David Crowder Band at a small venue on the University of Cincinnati campus several years ago. And tonight, we see David Crowder Band again as a family.

The band members are all from Texas and attended Baylor University. It's been rumored that this is their final tour. After seeing them in concert twice, it'll be a shame not to see them again. Their concert is good, clean, Christian fun!

Well Worth the Wait!

Thurman's Cafe opened in 1942, family run and owned for almost 70 years!

The last time we visited Thurman's, Alexander was a newborn! We waited for just shy of 1 1/2 hours, in the middle of the day, to be seated in the cafe.

The walls are decorated with vintage pictures and awards as well as hundreds of signed one dollar bills. The bar lines one side of the cafe and there are 5 wooden booths which seat up to 6 patrons on the opposite side. In addition, a few tables seating two patrons line the window area. Not a large place, but one that's ALWAYS busy!

The ceiling is lined with vintage Budweiser wallpaper.

Hmmmm....what could Thurman's possibly be known for serving?! HUGE 3/4 pound burgers! The Thurmanator (not pictured) has all kinds of "dressings" including 2 3/4 pound burgers! Now, that's a mouthful. Trey and I ordered the bleu cheese burger--fully dressed. And, oh my heavens--that's the best burger I've EVER tasted! SO worth the wait!

We can't wait to enjoy our Thurman Burgers--yum oh yum!

Alexander played baseball this season and so I volunteered to assist with stocking the concession stands. Little did I know how much work my volunteering would entail! I enlisted the help of Noah and his friend Eli. Two-three days each week since school ended in early June, the boys have been helping me stock the trailer below. The entire process generally took anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Although we did learn very quickly that "many hands DO make light work"!

Each day we were assigned to stock, we picked up Eli at 9:30am and headed to the trailer. Initially the boys questioned if it was OK to drive on the walking path--they were afraid of "getting in trouble". However, once they figured how far we'd have to walk carrying heavy crates of drinks and all the other supplies, they decided it was a necessity and very cool to drive on the path! The list below outlines our responsibility. We stocked meat, candy, ice cream, condiments, drinks, chips and various supplies. We perfected a system quickly--one of the boys would call out an item, using the inventory sheet as a guide, and would then mark the sheet appropriately. After we had an accurate count, we would pile back into the car, head to the storage shed, pack up the car and then return to the trailer to stock with the necessary supplies.

The boys expected monetary payment from the beginning and I had to remind them that "community service" means volunteering your time and services without pay. I promised that once our responsiblity concluded, I would reward them for all of their help. Last night, Noah and Eli enjoyed Rita's Italian Ice--a treat for all of their hardwork. Boys, thanks for helping me stock the Towers Trailer--it was a fun adventure!

I offered a few birthday celebration ideas, all of which Alexander declined. He really didn't want anyone making a big deal about his birthday. So, after offering my suggestions, he thought for a moment and asked if he could invite a friend, to a Clippers game.

Looks like Sophie, but it isn't. This Golden is trained to pick up the bats after each play and,

provide water to the players on the field--very impressive!

The boys enjoyed watching the Columbus Clippers pull past the Indianapolis Indians for a victory at home. The Clippers are currently in 1st place with the next team 11 games behind!

Swimming & S'mores

Unfortunately, while Evan was visiting us in Ohio, the weather was less than stellar! The majority of time was cool and rainy and each day we had to find an indoor activity to enjoy. One day we decided to visit the Westerville Community Center for swimming.

Although it was quite breezy the evening we decided to create s'mores, it was Evan's last night with us and well, I had promised they'd be able to make s'mores. SO...they did! They were finished within 20 minutes, so I took advantage of the fire and relaxed and read my book until this strong breeze came and the fire danced outside of the firepit. Ummm...that was enough for me and out went the flames.

Debbie and I met one day, shortly after moving to Maryland, at the "little park" that no longer exists. At the time, only Alexander and Selena were part of our respective families. Debbie and I spent a lot of time together--library story-times, feeding the ducks, play-dates at either one of houses, long walks with strollers and much time at the local parks. As the years passed during our 5 year stay in Maryland, Sebastian and Noah made an appearance and the play time expanded to include the two "infants". One of the neatest connections is that Debbie and Alexander share a birthday! We thoroughly enjoyed catching up with them at Bob Evan's Sunday morning (2.5 hours later--we decided we should part ways)

Evan's Ohio Visit--June 2011

For the first time, Evan joined us for 5 days in Ohio this summer. Evan and Noah met one hot summer day at the pool in our neighborhood in Georgia--shortly after we moved from Maryland. The boys and I were enjoying some much needed pool time and Kathie was there with her boys doing the same--the boys started playing at the pool while Kathie and I chatted--a life time family friendship was born.

In spite of distance, the boys have maintained their friendship and still enjoy spending time together. While visiting, Noah and Evan talked non-stop and were constantly finding new things to do--air soft target practice was one of their first "thrills" together.

Noah and I left Trey's family reunion in Chesapeake, Ohio and traveled South, via the help of GPS, to Corbin, KY where we met one my best girlfriends, Kathie, and her youngest son, Evan. If you've never been to Corbin, KY then you've missed out on visiting the birthplace of KFC!

We enjoyed visiting Havre de Grace, Maryland with our friends. We drove past the hospital where Noah was born many years ago. Neither Trey nor I remember the hospital being so small, but it's the place where we welcomed Noah into our family. Eleven and half years ago, Trey's parents walked with Alexander along the promenade after Alexander met his little brother for the first time. It was fun to return to an area that holds such a special memory for our family.

Some of the machinery used inside the grist mill dates back to the 1800's! It was amazing to walk on the wooden floors and carefully manuever up and down the very steep stairs. The mill is still in working order and offers fresh ground corn meal to patrons.

Both Alexander and Kirsten celebrate birthdays this week. Alexander turns 15 today and Kirsten celebrates her "Sweet 16" tomorrow. For one day throughout the year, they share the same age--today. During our Maryland visits, it's become an unwritten tradition to celebrate the kid's birthdays at Chevy's...a favorite Mexican restaurant of ours that we frequented with our friends many, many times.

We moved to Baltimore, Maryland in July, 1998, and lived in the Bel Air area for 5 years before relocating to our next home in 2003. Maryland is a gorgeous state--mountains on the western border and the Chesapeake Bay to the East. One of my favorite places to visit while living in Maryland was the Inner Harbor--the Aquarium and Science Center were always popular stops when we had out-of-town guests. We didn't have time to visit either of those two museums, only enough time to briefly enjoy the view.

Mohican Adventures

Trey decided very "last minute" to "vacation" the week of July 4th. Our weekend was busy with July 4th activities including a trip to Cleveland to watch the Yankees. We worked around the boys' sports schedules and decided (weather permitting) that Wednesday would be our day to enjoy the outdoors.

The boys and Mom decided to raft first while Dad took a spin in the kayak.

Little did we know that we'd be the ones "spinning". Thankfully we were able to master paddling after we turned a few circles and visited opposing banks a few times. Trey just laughed while trying to provide "instruction". And, as if trying to master paddling wasn't enough, Alexander accidentally dropped my disposable water camera. Suprisingly, I didn't yell, but laughed uncontrollably as we watched the camera float away; I think I was in disbelief. Needless to say, we paddled feverishly until I could strategically position myself, hanging over the edge of the raft, to successfully retrieve the run-away camera. And, no, I didn't get wet!

Trey was the first to kayak and paddled like a pro!
He paddled more than once upstream to encourage us in the right direction.

We successfully "banked" and Trey and Alexander swapped spots.
Alexander kayaked well, but his paddle strokes were major splashes--thank heavens for a warm day!

Noah decided that he'd be the next one in the kayak. He did great in the kayak until he ended up circling, narrowly missing a tree and banking before it was time. At least our adventure allowed for many laughs!

Oh my gosh--I've found my next sport. Kayaking is so peaceful, calm and relaxing--what a great experience!

We thoroughly enjoyed our family time at Mohican Adventures!

Dee and I found an amazing parking place, right on the Lake. Trey, his Dad and the boys arrived later and we backed my car allowing space for both vehicles. It doesn't sound exciting, but if you could have seen the limited number of spaces combined with cars lining the main road, you'd know it was a wise plan!

Another Milestone

Can you believe Noah's old enough to mow the lawn? I mowed the perimeter of the yard and Noah filled in the gaps with straight lines! I was very impressed with his attention to detail.

He was determined to make Dad proud--and he did!

Now, Alexander and Noah will alternate turns mowing the lawn. Another milestone in the Martin Family.

Noah visits Preschool

Although preschool generally follows our district calendar, our director opted to meet on the May district waiver day since we'd be finishing preschool the following week. Noah had been looking forward to this day in May for quite some time. He couldn't wait to finally meet my preschool friends and enjoy time volunteering in the classroom. The class adored having Noah visit and they were constantly requesting him to help with a puzzle, or play a game (below).

Noah and I read "The Hungry Caterpillar". He read the book while I used the sock puppet to demonstrate how much food that silly caterpillar enjoyed before becoming a butterfly.

The class enjoyed "The Hungry Caterpillar" so much that they asked Noah to read "one more story".

At the end of our very fast morning, we allowed Noah to remininsce about his preschool days and performed the "Tooty Ta" together. If you've never heard this song--you're missing out! Noah first performed this song during his Young 5s preschool graduation many years ago in Georgia. At the time, my assistant and I laughed so hard we had tears streaming down our faces. It's truly a fun song that children and adults enjoy!

Noah, thanks for waking early on your "day off" and spending a memorable day at preschool with Mom. You were an amazing help that day and the class absolutely adored you.

A Fresh New Look

Four years ago this June, we moved from Georgia and purchased our home in Ohio.

Through the years, we've added some subtle changes. We removed the hedge from under the living room window. And, more recently, removed the spreading juniper from the landscape aligning the front walk.

Removing the spreading juniper created a wide open space. After consulting with a Lowe's landscape assistant, we decided to plant annuals in the area to provide lasting color this summer/fall.

This back area has been a labor of love for me. When we first arrived the bed stopped just beyond the day lilies. One crazy Saturday I decided to extend the bed to include the tree (the evergreen was already included). Through the years I've added numerous perennials. This spring, Trey and I added the small retaining wall that lines the back portion of the bed.

A closer view...still lots to be done, but slowly, but surely the perennials are filling in the gaps.

I've always wanted a pond incorporated into our landscape. Living in Atlanta, I knew a pond would be an invitation to unwanted "friends", so once settled in Ohio, my pond became a reality. Again, it's still a work in progress, but ever so slowly, the area is beginning to take shape.

And, finally, our built in "umbrella" that naturally shades our table on the deck. A perfect location for a variety of hostas.

Recently, Trey ordered 4 yards of mulch. By the way--that's a lot of mulch! We spent several days pulling weeds, planting new plants and flowers and finally spreading mulch. We had SO much mulch that we extended current beds in order for our huge pile to be eliminated. All the hard work was worth it--it's refreshing to sit on the deck and enjoy the beauty around.

Allison asked her parents quite some time ago, if Noah and "Noah's Dad" could join them in the convertible for a trip to the DQ sometime during the summer. Well, last night was THE night. Allison's Mom phoned inviting Trey and Noah out for ice cream. I asked Noah if he was interested in going--and I truly believe his shoes were on his feet and he was outside waiting before I even responded "yes" to Amy. Needless to say, they all had a great time together!

Another Year Ends

It's hard to believe our family is saying "farewell" to another school year. Noah completes 5th grade and finishes his elementary school days.

Early this morning, several 5th grade Moms gathered at Alcott to create the above entrance into Alcott. Each 5th grader created and colored a sign. The signs were placed alphabetically and balloons were attached to each sign. A final farewell to the 5th graders!

The 5th grade committee provided lunch for the 5th graders and their families. In addition, each class was assigned a side dish or dessert to add to the lunch buffet. Following lunch, the 5th graders headed to the playground for a final recess.

Following the awards ceremony, the 5th graders were invited to walk the Alcott halls a final time. The younger students lined the hallways and clapped for the 5th graders as they passed by. Meanwhile, the parents anxiously awaited outside for their child to exit elementary school one last time.

Mr. Mazzon and Noah. We can't thank Mr. Mazzon enough for nurturing, challenging, encouraging and supporting Noah throughout his 5th grade year. It was by far the most difficult year for Noah, but also the most rewarding. Good teachers DO make a difference in a child's life! Thank you Mr. Mazzon!

Ice Storm 2.1.11

We awoke yesterday morning, February 1, 2011, to ice and a snow day. The driveways and sidewalks around town were quite treacherous, but the beauty of the ice was amazing.

Our tree out front, above, yesterday morning and again, last night, after another 1/4 inch of ice added to the 1/4 inch of ice already resting on the branches. The branches were so weighted with ice that they nearly kissed the sidewalk. I'm relieved this morning that the tree survived without visible damage.

The tiniest leaf left-over from Fall completely surrounded by a layer of ice. Even the "drip" remained frozen.

While the ice was beautiful and sparkled as the car lights illuminated the branches last night, it has wreaked havoc on the area. The boys are without school for the 2nd day in a row and we lost power for a few hours yesterday evening and again last night. Today, the winds are fierce (up to 50 mph gusts) and all of the ice from the trees is scattered around the yard, frozen into the remaining snow, as ice pellets. We're happy the worst of the storm is passed and are saying prayers for our friends farther North enduring inches and inches of snow. Stay safe everyone!

Ohio State Hockey Game

Saturday, January 22, 2011, we attended our first Ohio State hockey game. The games are played at the Schottenstein Center on campus; same arena as Ohio State basketball. We started our evening with dinner at Barley's before heading to campus on a very frigid night! Trey did an amazing job with our seats and we enjoyed center row seats--perfect vantage point for a fast paced hockey game.

I learned two things while watching the game. First, a "power play" occurs when one team has a player(s) in the penalty box and the other team has a full team on the ice. And, if a player is in the penalty box and the other team scores, regardless of penalty time remaining, the player is "released". So, I tried my best to learn a little, which I did, but I'm still unclear of how this game's really played. It's definitely fun to watch!

After the 1st period, Brutus helped two little peewee leagues begin their 4 minute game. Oh my gosh, it was adorable to watch the little ones on the ice!

We enjoyed a wonderful family evening together and hope to return for another hockey game soon!

January Winter White

Winter white returns to our area. We enjoyed warmer temperatures earlier in the week and watched the snow slowly disappear as the rain chipped away at it. We were finally enjoying the grass, but today the grass disappears under another blanket of white.

A rare scene--our roads are covered in snow in spite of the plows being through our area several times this afternoon. We've shoveled once and will most lucky need to shovel again when the snow finally ends.

Typically, I dread the sight of snow and wait impatiently for Spring to finally appear after what feels like 6 months of winter. For some unknown reason, I'm actually enjoying the white snow this winter. It truly looks beautiful as it hugs the branches and covers, once again, the grass. I'd love to take the boys sledding, tubing--some sort of outside winter activity. Unfortunately, the temperatures are predicted to plummet below zero tomorrow and the thought of outside activities will have to remain just that...a mere thought. In the mean time, we'll enjoy the quiet, peacefulness of the winter white.

Shooting Hoops

Alexander invited Noah outside to "shoot hoops" and what followed made my heart smile. Alexander was politely guiding Noah on the proper technique for shooting a basket and patiently showing Noah a lay-up. The boys get along well, but their interests differ considerably. So, it was heartwarming to see them enjoying time together. Alexander promised to help Noah continue to perfect his game and Noah took his brother's promise seriously. The next morning, Noah announced that he wanted to play basketball this winter--all it took was two brothers spending a little one on one together.

We thoroughly enjoyed watching Noah on the court. Alexander has been true to his word and has attended Noah's practices and offered his advice and assistance. Both boys are playing basketball this winter and I'm one happy Mom--absolutely LOVE watching the boys play their sports!

Preparing for the "Right Family" Christmas story and then a crazy round of the "Twelve Days of Christmas"

Ryan, now 21, was our ring bearer when Trey and I were married. He's pictured with his girlfriend, Jenna.

Trey and his Aunt Cheryl have traded "candy jokes" ever since Trey offered salt flavored salt water taffy when their two families were vacationing at Disney World in the 1980's. This year Cheryl sent gross Jelly Bellys-some of the flavors include: skunk smell, pencil shavings, baby wipe, rotten egg and vomit to name a few. Trey and his cousin Tracy deciding who should try the next jelly bean.

"Here, try this!" Trey offers. Notice a poker face Alexander--he's not revealing the flavor, "just try it".

Visit to Hilton Head

Rather than visit during Thanksgiving, we opted to spend more time in Hilton Head and traveled South the week prior to Christmas. It was fun to see all the holiday decorations and to fondly recognize several items that Mom has displayed since I was a young girl. We were able to spend some time with Trey's family in Columbia, SC before arriving at my parent's home in Sun City Hilton Head. We were excited to celebrate Boo's birthday with her this year. She requested a special dinner which Mom prepared and we shared with my aunts and uncle too.

A visit to Harbor Town resulted in the purchase of "Hilton Head-opoly". We played a couple of "intense" rounds before finally agreeing to "end the game" after 2 hours of play.

Noah worked hard during the month of December in school creating a "pop-up" book. He wrapped the gift at school and gave it to my parents for Christmas. Noah did a wonderful job writing his story as well as creating a "pop-up" element for each page. What a treasure for my parents to keep and enjoy!

My sister was a little disappointed when she recognized that she and Noah are now the same height! It was fun for the boys to spend time with Aunt Boo. I know she misses her "big buddy" and "little buddy" as much as they miss her.

Christmas Traditions

Since our return to Ohio in June 2007, we have driven through the "Festival of Lights" at Alum Creek each Christmas. Although the sets remain the same, it's still fun to look at all the different displays. The snow was falling as we drove through the park adding to the holiday magic.

At the "lodge" there's a special room reserved for Santa and his visitors. Each family takes a number and waits for their turn with Santa--would you believe that this year we were Sant's first visitors of the evening?! Since the boys are older, it's the only way I can encourage them to have pictures taken with Santa.

Since returning to Ohio, each year early in December, Trey's parents request the presence of the boys for a weekend of Christmas celebrating. While I was away visiting my family last weekend, the boys ventured to Lima for their annual event. Grammy packs as much as she can into a weekend! The boys awoke last Saturday and after finishing chores to earn Christmas spending money, Trey's parents took them bowling (Noah beat Alexander by a point--you know how well THAT went over), shopping, to the Christmas tree festival and then to a movie. Following dinner, Uncle Chris, Trey's Dad and the boys watched Uncle Chris' friend cage wrestle. It was a full day ending after midnight. The next morning the boys arose early to make homemade cinnamon sugar donuts and then the infamous cookie baking and decorating. I regret not taking pictures of this year's "masterpieces" as they were the best the boys have ever created. Dee mentioned that Alexander was quite meticulous with his decorating this year--a far cry from when he was 3 and dumped as much suger, sprinkles and other decorations onto his cookies. Dee and Larry, thanks again for a memorable weekend for the boys--we're happy that you were able to spend the weekend with all 3 grandchildren.

Three years ago I doubted whether or not our family truly needed a puppy; especially during a cold, wintry Ohio January. She was an adorable puppy and surprisingly good. Of course, we had a few mishaps along the way, but she was a puppy after all. Three years later, I can't imagine our family without our Sweet Sophie girl.
